Stump grinding machinery removing a tree stump

After a tree comes down, the stump can be an eyesore, a mowing obstacle and a source of suckering regrowth. Our stump grinding service uses a tracked or portable grinder to chip the stump and main roots into mulch, typically to a depth that lets you turf, plant or lay paving over the area.

We assess stump size, species, access for machinery and what you plan to do with the ground afterwards — deeper or wider grinding may be needed for construction footings or large specimens. Narrow side gates and raised beds are common; we will say if a smaller machine or hand-clearance is more appropriate.

Grinding is usually less disruptive than full stump excavation and leaves surrounding planting more intact, though very large root plates can still affect nearby features — we flag that when we quote.

Woodchip and soil from the grind is raked back into the hole or removed as agreed so you are not left with a messy crater. Underground services must be respected: tell us about irrigation, lighting or other buried lines near the stump so we can plan safe working distances.

Key Benefits

  • Removes the visible stump and main structural roots
  • Stops most species from re-sprouting from the old stump
  • Levels the area for lawn, beds, patios or replanting
  • Less invasive than digging out a full root ball in many cases
  • Professional grinder operated by trained staff
  • Free, no-obligation quotes and clear pricing

Why homeowners choose us

Stump grinding is messy if it is rushed. We set up for chip control, work to an agreed depth, and leave the site usable — not a mulch pile halfway up the fence.

Professional & accountable

You get a clear quote: which stump, how deep we will grind, what happens to the arisings, and any access assumptions — before we start the machine.

Accurate depth & clean-up

We grind to suit your next step — lawn, planting or hardstanding — and rake or remove chip so you are not left with a buried stump under an inch of soil.

Safe around property

We check for obstacles, fences, glass and buried services in the work zone. If a stump sits tight to a building, we discuss realistic clearance and protection.

Arisings handled

Excess chip can be left on site for mulch, levelled into the depression, or taken away — whatever we agree in the quote.

When is stump grinding the right option?

It is ideal when you want the footprint of an old tree gone without a major excavation — for example to open up a lawn, extend a patio, or stop suckers shooting from an old cherry or plum stump.

Very large stumps, stumps on steep banks, or trees removed years ago with extensive regrowth may need a different plan; we will advise after a look at access and size.

If a tree was protected, consent may still apply to grinding the stump — check with your local authority if you are unsure. We can carry out work that matches approved specifications.

Grinding vs full removal

Grinding removes the stump and primary roots to a practical depth for landscaping. It does not always remove every lateral root under a lawn — for structural building work you may need a deeper or wider specification, which we can quote separately.

Full mechanical excavation of a root plate is a bigger job with more ground disturbance. Where grinding is enough, it is usually quicker and kinder to the rest of the garden.

How we work

  1. Enquiry & free quote

Send photos or arrange a visit. We measure rough stump size, check access for the grinder, and ask what you want to do with the ground next.

  2. Clear price & date

You receive a fixed quote covering grinding depth, clean-up and disposal of chip if needed. We book a slot that suits you, including weekends when available.

  3. Grinding on site

We set up, grind the stump to the agreed depth, and manage chip so paths and neighbours stay as tidy as practical for the job.

  4. Handover

We level off, walk through the result with you, and note anything to allow for before turf or paving (settling, topsoil, etc.).
