Crown reduction — careful reduction of tree canopy size

Crown reduction is for when a tree's canopy has simply outgrown its space — over roofs, shading the lawn, or crowding boundaries — but you want to keep the tree. We shorten outer branches back to suitable growth points so the overall height and spread are reduced while the tree keeps a balanced, natural outline.

This is not "topping" (blunt cuts across the crown that look unsightly and weaken trees). Proper crown reduction follows arboricultural principles: reductions are spread through the crown, cuts are placed where the tree can compartmentalise well, and we avoid removing more foliage than the species can tolerate.

We often combine crown reduction with selective thinning where it helps light and wind penetration. Every job is assessed for access, targets underneath, and how much reduction is realistic in one visit — sometimes phased work is better for very large or stressed trees.

Branches are lowered with ropes where needed to protect glass, fences and planting. Arisings are chipped and removed as standard so your garden is left neat and usable.

Key Benefits

  • Reduces overall height and spread of an overgrown canopy
  • More daylight into the house and garden
  • Less sail area in storms — reduced risk of failure
  • Retains a natural-looking profile — not flat topping
  • Ideal near buildings, boundaries and overhead lines (where safe)
  • Free, no-obligation quotes and clear pricing

Why homeowners choose us

Crown reduction needs judgement: too little and nothing changes; too much can stress the tree. We reduce proportionally and evenly so the result looks right and lasts.

Professional & accountable

We agree a realistic reduction target with you — how much smaller the crown should feel — and explain what can be achieved in one visit versus phased work.

Balanced reduction

Height and spread are taken down together where possible so the tree does not look one-sided or "hat-racked". The aim is a harmonious outline, not a harsh flat top.

Controlled lowering

Outer wood is often removed in sections with ropes so nothing drops uncontrolled onto conservatories, sheds or neighbour fences.

Tree health first

We avoid stripping the crown or making cuts that invite decay. Species, age and condition all feed into how much we recommend removing.

When is crown reduction the right choice?

It suits mature trees that have grown larger than the garden or building line allows — for example shading a patio, brushing against gutters, or overhanging a public path. It can also reduce load on limbs that have become long and heavy.

If the main issue is only deadwood, crossing branches or a few problem limbs, selective pruning may be enough. If the tree is the wrong species for the plot or structurally failing, we will say so and discuss removal or other options honestly.

Trees protected by a TPO or in a conservation area usually need local authority approval before significant crown work. We can carry out reductions that match an approved specification — you remain responsible for securing consent where it applies.

Crown reduction vs topping or pollarding

Topping means indiscriminate cutting across the crown and often leads to weak epicormic growth and long-term decline. We do not top trees — crown reduction uses proper reduction cuts and retains a natural form.

Pollarding is a different cycle of management (regular cutting back to knuckles) used on certain species and street trees. If pollarding is what you need, ask us and we can advise whether it is suitable for your tree.

How we work

  1. Enquiry & free quote

Call, WhatsApp or use our quote form. We often need to see the tree to judge proportion, access and the safest sequence of work.

  2. Clear scope & price

Your quote describes the reduction in plain terms, how arisings will be cleared, and when we can attend — including weekends when available.

  3. Reduction on site

We work systematically through the crown, using lowering ropes where needed and checking balance as we go so the finished shape looks even.

  4. Tidy handover

Chip and timber are removed as quoted. We review the result with you before we leave.

Dealt with a tricky crown reduction right next to our conservatory without a scratch. Knowledgeable, polite, and efficient. Couldn't ask for more.
